Tonight i also decided to pick up a nice pint. i always enjoy a nice special rare beer. Seeing as how i love Frank Zappa I’ve really liked getting this beer, i mean just look how cool the bottle looks, but what about inside.

This is the first time I’ve had this Zappa beer, i had the kill ugly radio one which was quite bitter and hoppy as can be. Which to me was a bit of a turn off considering i don’t really care for most pale ales. This beer however, is nothing like that.

Its really hard to describe but it is an ale, a brown ale from what i’ve read on other web pages. Its not very bitter at all ether which makes it extremely different from its brother ‘kill ugly radio’. It has a very light fruity bitter taste that tastes like some grape was added in somewhere. The taste is really mixed though, it has some elements of a brown ale but it also has some very weird elements of an IPA for instance you can tell this beer is sweet, but its bitter as well, however its not really predominately one or the other so its a very confusing taste to describe.

Personally i like it, but i wouldn’t buy it all the time, which is why i think its great it only comes in a pint, its the kind of beer that you would only want to enjoy once a month at most, and in that since its perfect for what it is. However i could see most of the people i know trying this beer and hating it. I like it for its complex taste and smoothness, this isn’t an average ale, in fact its far from it, but i would high recommend it if your in the mood for something different.

Flying Dog Brewery – Road Dog

January 31, 2008 at 2:20 am (Beer, Road dog, Scotish Porter, denver, flying dog, porter)

Its snowing out so i decided to pick up a sick pack tonight, always a good idea in colorado in case you get snowed in.

Road Dog Porter by Flying Dog Brewery

Recently i heard on the news that the flying dog brewery is moving all there production to Maryland. This is kind of sad for me because flying dog was one of the first micro brews i ever bought after i turned 21 and its still easily one of my favorites. Seeings how is dark and snowy outside i decided to go with a nice porter tonight. I find that porters (and stouts) are really great beers to drink when its snowing outside, there nice and think and packed with flavor.

Road dog is a very standard porter, and by saying that it doesn’t really have any strong characteristics that make it sound out against other porters, but thats not a bad thing. What i think they’ve really done with this beer is taken an idea and perfected it. Its thick and has a very sweet bitter taste but goes down really smooth. It has a very mild flavor as it enters your mouth however it gets alot bolder as it sits in your mouth and leaves you with a really nice after taste.

Intro

January 26, 2008 at 10:50 am (Avery, Avery Brewing, Beer, J's Brew Guide, White Rascal)

Hi,

I’m going to be working on this guide over the next few years for the benefit of my self and whoever cares to read it. Just a little info about me, I’m 22 and live near Denver in Colorado. I’m giving that info out because a lot of our micro brews don’t leave the state to my knowledge.

I’m the kind of person that buys a different six pack every time i get beer because I’m a firm beleaver that verity is the greatest thing in the world. However because there are nearly 150 beers in my area alone often times i forget which one was which or just how a certain one really was. Not to mention the 50 odd beers i had in Belgium last summer.

I’ll say it right off, i really don’t like pale ales or IPAs however there are a few i do like and i’m willing to give them a chance, but if that is your favorite kind of beer theres a strong chance you won’t agree with most of the beers i like. I love dark beers, Barely wines (triples) and wheat beers without a doubt those are my favorites. I also love a lot of European biers.

Now just to get a few beers up on the board and my format for gradeing down i thought i’d start with two of my favorite beers.

My top pick for my area: Avery Brewing’s White Rascal

This really is one taste wheat beer. Its very light and goes down smooth. Doesn’t have too much of an orangey taste like many local wheat brews, however orange is used in it. It is packed with flavor from the spices and the coriander, very crisp. But my absolute favorite thing about it is how it truly captures the taste of a Belgian white beer. I wondered why this tasted so authentically Belgian and realized that about half the ingredients that go into this beer are actually imported from Belgium. As far as I’m concerned this is THE BEST light beer you can get around these parts. I’ll do a more comprehensive review next time i get a 6 pack of it.

Next my all time favorite beer: Leffe TripleHowever i’m unable to give an accurate review of it because i haven’t had it since August 07 and as I’m writing this its January 08. When reading my 1-10 scale i use this as a benchmark to judge all others. this is the only beer i have ever had that i would give an 10 to.

Anyways if you read this far, see you next 6 pack!
