Garde Dog (Biere de garde) by Flying dog Brewery

March 26, 2008 at 8:30 pm (Beer, Biere de garde, flying dog) (, , )

Photobucketi think this maybe the first seasonal I’ve seen from flying dog also on top of that its a biere de garde, for those who don’t know thats a very rare style of French beer that is a lot like a pale ale. it was originally made in case the other beer they made would go bad. Basically, its beer for keeping.

This beer comes on with a fairly intense french style hop taste, the best thing i could compare it to would be 1664, its got that really dry hop taste to it (not to be confused with dry hopped taste). If you let it sit in your mouth you can just taste the French beer style. Brings me back to drinking in Britange in France last summer. Although to tell you the truth i feel that this beer is better than most of the French beers i had wile i was in France, wile i don’t think most of them where in this style and where just lagers, they still have a very familiar taste that other French beers have. The beer finishes off very light and leaves only a very slight bitter taste in your mouth that isn’t as bitter as a pale ale. This beer is also EXTREMELY light however it doesn’t lack any flavor because of it, it still has a nice hoppy taste to it so it doesn’t disappoint. I think theres a lot to this beer if you know how to look hard enough.

I also really respect flying dog for there use of an old style you can’t really find here in the states.

Alaskan Amber by Alaskan Brewing co.

March 25, 2008 at 12:18 am (Beer)

PhotobucketFor the last few days i’ve been talking about how i’ve wanted to try an alaskan beer, next thing i know i walk in to a liquer store and find one!

This is a really nice amber beer with a very light flavor thats nice and malty and goes down smooth. There isn’t too much complexity however the flavor thoughout is very good. The choice of hops also agree with the malts makeing them very mild but there, with no bitterness. What stands out the most is the nice malt flavor to it, its not as strong as a porter but it packs some pretty good malt flavor for how light it is.

Irish red by Samuel Adams

March 21, 2008 at 3:38 am (Beer)

Leftover from st. pattys i had another irish beer.

I usually don’t like red ales because there basically lagers with a bite, however a proper red beer should have a nice malty flavor to it, this doesn’t fail in that one bit. Its farily thick for an ale and has a good malty flavor the whole time your drinking it, expecally near the end. This beer goes down smooth and is just wonderful going down, it makes you wanna take another sip every time you taste it. Its fairly light and refreshing with a very good malt flavor to it, its the best of both worlds. I really like this beer a lot, i think its one of the best sam adam’s brews i’ve had.

Draught Irish Stout by Beamish

March 19, 2008 at 3:58 am (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I bought Beamish’s Draught Irish Stout on St. Patty’s day but I had to go to the torture chamber (dentist) today so I saved myself a few.

I’m gonna say it, I’m a little sick of Guinness. I’ve just had so much lately I had to find another Irish stout so that I could compare the styles of stouts.

I did the proper pouring method into a glass from the can it came in. Just like in Guinness cans, Beamish’s Irish Stout also has widgets in each one, ensuring a healthy head on your glass of beer. For a stout the beer itself is fairly light but the head on it is so creamy, its really quite wonderful. However, I ended up drinking up most of the head in the first few sips so it’s not as lasting as I would prefer. As far as taste goes Beamish’s Irish Stout is nothing complex, it tastes like an Irish stout, maybe a little lighter with some different malty tones than other stouts on the market. It’s slightly bitter, and although the taste is light the beer is at the same time nice and heavy. After half a beer you feel like you’ve eaten a small meal, which is always a great feeling to get from a brew.

As far as stouts are concerned this would have to be one of my favorites, and it is definitely better than Guinness, but I’d rather just get a milk stout.

Farmer’s Friend Irish Style Ale by Palisade Brewery

March 18, 2008 at 3:37 am (Ale, Beer, porter) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

PhotobucketAfter the first sip of Farmer’s Friend I have to say I’m surprised, this beer is delicious.

When you first take a sip Farmer’s Friend has a very mellow taste. If you let the beer sit on your palette for a little while you’ll begin to experience a malty, almost caramel taste that comes though very strongly. This is no ordinary ale, with that malty burst Farmer’s Friend is just out of this world. With the malt flavor the first thing to come to mind is a porter but it goes down like an ale. I just can’t say how much i love the taste, it kind of reminds me of Cocoa Porter at times. This really is a proper ale. I don’t know about how ‘Irish’ it tastes but who cares?

This ale rocks, and it’s as good as any porter.

Agave Wheat by Breckenridge Brewery

March 18, 2008 at 3:08 am (Beer, Wheat Beer) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

PhotobucketI’ve always been intrigued by the look of this brew so I decided to give it a try tonight.

Breckenridge Brewery’s Agave Wheat is an interesting take on a wheat beer because you’re mixing a Belgian concept and mixing it the agave cactus, a distinctly South American flavor.

The Result? The lightest wheat beer you’ve ever heard of.

The agave adds a very mellow flavor to it, however it’s not really like tequila, as I thought it would be. The agave is actually the primary flavor adding a slight bite to the almost overly mellow wheat taste. If it wasn’t for the aftertaste (and color) you almost couldn’t tell that it’s a wheat beer. To tell you the truth this isn’t that great for a wheat beer.

I respect Breckenridge Brewery’s creativeness in making it but Agave Wheat is just too mellow.

Tire Bite Golden Ale by Flying Dog Brewery

March 18, 2008 at 2:28 am (Ale, Beer, flying dog, golden ale) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

PhotobucketThis is an old favorite of mine and since Flying Dog is leaving Denver I figured I’d give it a review while it’s local.

Tire Bite is a very mellow ale with light, lager-like hops and no bitterness whatsoever. A great thing about Tire Bite is although it has all these mellow and light features it still tastes like an ale. The mellowness of this beer is both a blessing and a curse for it, however. Although I enjoy how light it goes down I just feel that it lacks flavor. Tire Bite is basically an ale with no bite or bitterness to it, which is nice, but it’s just too mellow for me.

It’s just not exciting, but I think this would be a good beer if you were looking to get smashed since it’s so light and mellow.

Tire Bite is all bark, no bite.

Pinstripe Red Ale by Ska Brewing co

March 14, 2008 at 6:18 am (Uncategorized)

PhotobucketSka brewing might have been have been the first micro brew i have ever tired with there true blonde ale. Going with the season i decided to get another red ale.

This beer is pretty smooth and has a strong red ale. The beer leaves a nice malty aftertaste in your mouth. However the it almost feels like you have alcohol just sitting in your mouth with the flavor, well not really that strong but you can taste it. When it first goes in your mouth its very smooth but i think the next flavor the red ale kinda taste is too strong and the malty finish is nice. This beer is okay but i probably won’t buy it again.

Black Hawk Stout by Mendocino Brewing Co.

March 14, 2008 at 5:20 am (Uncategorized)

UNFORTUNATELY the website lagged and deleted my Two reviews of this. So i’m gonna write the quick version of this.

This stout is pretty decent although it has some hoppy tones that set it apart from other stouts which is odd because most stouts taste very similar. It goes down very light and has a nice malty aftertaste.

Fire Rock Pale Ale by Kona Brewing co

March 14, 2008 at 4:42 am (Ale, Beer, Pale Ale)

PhotobucketI’m surprised i haven’t managed to review anything from kona yet because i really do like there brewery from what i’ve seen.

Fire rock pale ale is very light and not that hoppy. It doesn’t really have any definitive flavor in any direction, Its light and slightly hoppy with some hits of malt and a very light malt aftertaste. This beer is okay but its so mellow its a little boreing. The one thing i really like about it though is the nice Malty aftertaste, it coasts your mouth with a nice smooth malt flavor. This is a very non-traditional pale ale but i also think its nothing too special ether.
