Mocha Porter by Rogue

May 1, 2008 at 8:00 pm (Uncategorized)

PhotobucketI was trying to remember which beers by rogue were recommended to me but i decided to just go with there porter, since there my favorite beer usually i can’t go wrong.

I’ll say it right off this is another fairly bitter beer, but on a porter this is actually a very unique approach for a beer as malty as a porter. The Mocha taste really comes though because of the bitterness, in the aftertaste the mocha and the bitter kind of mix together for this great aftertaste flavor. I think this beer also really complements a cigarette if you happen to smoke. The coffee components of the Mocha flavor come through the most with a very little bit of chocolate taste, its there though. Wile i appreciate the unique bitter approach to a porter i think that this one is just a little too bitter for me to drink it regularly.

DPA Denver Pale Ale by Great Divide

April 30, 2008 at 3:57 am (Uncategorized)

Photobucketwell everyone i have an exciteing announcement to make about this post, this post marks

the 100th review!

and i can’t find anymore of a fitting beer to review for this than this one, the Denver pale ale, I’ve never tried it but the name alone just screams of what my blog was founded for, local Colorado brewerys.

DPA is a really nice pale ale, its not too overly bitter and the hops taste fantastic. Theres not a lot of complexity to this beer but who cares, its a nice mild and great tasting pale ale, which is actually somewhat hard to find. I’d rate this one up there with 5 barrel or pass time. I wouldn’t quite say the hops are as good but there up there. One thing i really like about this beer too is the smell, it smells great, i always say IPAs and pale ales are the best smelling beers and this one has a nice aroma of hops, its really nice. Theres a small amount of bitterness but theres a little nip of malt in the middle that kills it for the most part, theres still a little bitter though.

Turbodog by Abita Brewing co.

April 30, 2008 at 3:14 am (Uncategorized)

Ever since i tried the purple haze by Abita I’ve been a bit turned off to this brewery but i’m willing to give it another shot!

Turbodog is a brown ale thats not too bad and very balanced, much more balanced than most other brown ales. First of all the flavor is very unique for a brown ale, usually there not dry hopped and usually they don’t have cocoa malts.  The most dominating flavor is a very dry hop flavor. The malts are mellow and almost hard to notice unless you point them out, except in the aftertaste. The malts are very mild tasting of coca and a bit of toffee flavor that consumes the aftertaste. This is among the best brown ales i’ve tried.

Abbey by New Belgium

April 30, 2008 at 1:40 am (Uncategorized)

Abbey is biased on the Belgian dubbel style of beer. The beer is mild and fresh tasting, it has some very strong began flavors, the spices and yeast flavor remind me a lot of most Belgian beers. The spices are mild but still very present. One thing that i noticed when i first tried this beer is you can taste the alcohol quite a bit, its not bad, you can just taste it for sure. Its taste is pretty rich and quite good i really like the spices in this beer.

Taddy Porter by Samuel Smith

April 26, 2008 at 2:05 am (Uncategorized)

PhotobucketThis is a porter from england, where porter originated from. This beer tastes pretty good but its quite a bit different from most of the American porters. The taste is more roasted malty tasting than most American beers the roasted flavor almost makes it kind of feel like a stout a little bit. The malts in it are pretty good but also a little more mild than it’s counterpart across the ocean. The aftertaste left in your mouth is really nice, its a lingering malt taste that is somewhat creamy. This porter is really good but don’t let your self be over charged for it, alot of liquerstores sell this for $5 a pint but if you look around its only 3.50.

Working Class Milk Stout by Ska Brewing

April 25, 2008 at 4:34 pm (Uncategorized)

PhotobucketThis milk stout is really good, its really sweet. This beer is filled with really great malts, the malts don’t really have a roasted flavor at all, its mostly caramel and chocolate malts. The beer is pretty creamy and not too stouty, but the stout taste is still there, its just very mild. This is one fantastic milk stout.

In-Heat Wheat by Flying Dog Brewery

April 25, 2008 at 3:11 am (Uncategorized)

PhotobucketIn-Heat Wheat is pretty mild wheat beer with a very light hint of spice. This beer is really light and pretty refreshing. Weirdly enough it has a slight and i mean ever so slight amount of bitterness just before the aftertaste. If you let the beer sit in your mouth you can feel the spice taste rise. This is a nice mild wheat beer but theres nothing that stands out a lot about this beer, its above average and i would/will drink it again.

1554 by New Belgium

April 24, 2008 at 2:18 am (Uncategorized)

PhotobucketThis is an old favorite of mine and considering how big New Belgium is i should probably start tackling some reviews of the biggest and most famous microbrewery in Colorado. This is also a favorite of a friend of mine who doesn’t even really drink! so thats gotta say something about the quality of this brew

This beer acctully has a pretty funny story to it apparently the orignal recipe for 1554 was lost in a flood in 1997 and the current beer is based on a trial and error account of an old belgian black beer. This beer is fantastic, its almost like a Schwartzbier, its light but malty enough to satisfy the malt enthusiast such as my self. The malts are nice and chocolaty, rich, and just wonderful. The beer almost has a creamy texture. Since this is a very lost style of beer i can’t really compare it to anything elce, its just 1554, and it’s fantastic.

The Censored Rich Copper Ale by Lagunitas Brewing co.

April 24, 2008 at 1:37 am (Uncategorized)

PhotobucketThis is a really nice ale, rich would be the proper term for it. The beer has a very mild hop taste but some really nice caramel malt. The aftertaste is really nice, the malts linger and its really great. The hops come on very early and are quickly washed away by the malts, however for the short amount of time you get to spend with them its really quite good. If you let the beer sit in your mouth you can enjoy the hops for a little wile longer, which is nice because i really do like the hops in this. This is one quality ale, the great thing is its not trying to be anything elce, just standard perfected ale flavor.

Twisted Creek Wheat by Crabtree Brewing

April 24, 2008 at 1:11 am (Uncategorized)

PhotobucketCrabtree usually suprizes me with alot of there beers, they seem like there going to be simple standard beers but they always have a wonderful amount of complexity, of course i’m speaking of there beer ‘boxcar brown’ which just melted my face off with how unique it was last week.

Twisted Creek is a really nice wheat beer. First of all, theres some very mild banana clove flavor which i love. Personally i feel that wheat beer is all about spices to make the beer delicious, this is the way Beligans did it, its the way everyone should, although this beer is actually based off German wheat beers. What makes this wheat beer nice is it balances the wheat flavor with a very mild banana clove spice flavor, making it not too sharp with the spices however not too mild because all it has is Wheat beer flavor. The after taste dies off quickly, making this beer pretty refreshing to boot. This is a really nice wheat beer because it acheaves a really great balance of spice and wheat.
