08 Notion by Magic Hat

July 31, 2008 at 8:41 pm (Uncategorized)

This is another on my summer review series on the east coast. Magic hat brewery is a local favortie here so i picked up the sampler so i could give it a try.

Notion is a darker light ale that has a bit of a citrusy flavor to it. This beer reminds me of a shawartz bier with the malts being alot lighter than any other one i have had. This beer also has a bit of limon citrus flavor to it that kind of hangs around during the whole thing, the limon flavor really makes this beer feel like a summer beer. A Summer Shawartz… quite possablity one of the oddest combinations i’ve heard of, mixing extreme light and dark. Notion is pretty good, the malt satisfys and limon flavor isn’t so strong it makes the beer boreing. I think its a nice combination but i wish it was just a little thicker.

Old north is a fairly simple and smokey stout that’s rather smooth and delicous. The malts come through very smooth and the beer goes down silky. Overall the malt has a mild smokey flavor. Its rather good.

West End Wheat by Carolina Brewery

West end wheat is a really nice light hefeweizen it’s spicy and has some really good tasting clove, it’s really mild compared to most. It has a bit of zest flavor to it which is really nice. Overall this is a better than average hefe.

Copperline amber ale by carolina brewery

July 23, 2008 at 5:58 pm (Uncategorized)

Coperline Is a fantastic amber ale, immedately it reminds me of fat tire. Not quite a biscuty but still wonderful, the malt is nice and just blends with the beer nicely. Well balanced is a word that comes to mind with this one. It’s so mellow and so flavorful, it’s really great. This amber aims to please, I could easily drink off this one all night.

Firecracker pale ale by carolina brewery

July 23, 2008 at 5:37 pm (Uncategorized)

Firecracker is a easy going pale ale that’s not overly hoppy or bitter. It’s light and a little dry. The hops are very mild and mostly add to an overall mild bitterness. This pale ale is defnately good at what it wants to be but it’s just too mild for me personally.

Oaymeal Porter by Carolina brewery

July 22, 2008 at 10:42 pm (Uncategorized)

this wonderful porter has a great roasted taste to it. Then oatmeql taste is way domminant making it seem like a stout. The rich porter taste is properly malt. This beer has a nice consistancy good and thick. There seems to be a bit of mild chocolate malts in it. This porter is wicked smooth and fantastic.

flagship ipa by Carolina brewery

July 22, 2008 at 10:21 pm (Uncategorized)

Flagship is a hoppy but drinkable ipa. This one is mildly bitter but it’s not that bad, there Is a lot of fruityness to be found in the bitterness. The hops in this one are fairly bold but more smooth and bitter than anything. I do like this ipa though I feel it’s a nice blend of bitter and fruity in an ipa.

Flagship : (8.3/10)

lewis black imperial stout by top of the hill

July 19, 2008 at 11:38 pm (Uncategorized)

this is the king of malt it’s so dark it blows my mind. This stout takes creamy and smooth to the next level it’s fantastic. Aside from the perfect texture the flavor is nice, it’s a nice roasted malt flavor on top of some moderately chocolately malts. This stout is nice and well rounded, perfect smooth texture and a nice mild but flavor packed malt flavor. This is one easy drinkin stout!

rams head ipa by top of the hill brewery

July 19, 2008 at 11:14 pm (Uncategorized)

rams head is a nice bold ipa. The hops come through wonderfully. The hope are fairly dry and are grapefruity. The bitterness is a lot lighter than I thought it would be it’s not harsh at all. The hops right off the bat arecvery bold the come on so quick it’s great. The hops are so much better than west coast hope too. It feels like it’s really carefully brewed. This is a great ipa from north Carolina.

Gonzo Imperial Porter By Flying Dog Brewery

July 14, 2008 at 1:10 am (Uncategorized)

This porter is fantastic, i’ll say it right now. The porter is so thick, its really nice. Theres plenty of malts in this one, it has a strong coffee flavor.  I usually consider porters to be farily simple but this one has some complexitys. Wile the coffee flavor is quite domminat you also get some hop flavor with this one, but its alot milder than you would expect. The aftertaste is just filled with the coffee malts that make this porter fantastic. I honestly can beleave how good this porter is, the malts just don’t stop, and i love it. This is what i would consider the Double IPA for Malty beer lovers. THIS BEER IS AN ABSOLUTLE MUST TRY.

I enjoyed this beer so much i think i’m going to be awarding the first 10 out of 10 ever.
